Switzerland!

Maria, our very sweet host, asked Paige to email her. She doesn't speak a lick of English, but love and kindness is all it takes.

Time for laundry. It was a miracle that we found this place. We had a village name, a street, but by now you probably understand from us that there are no street names. So, the fact that we stumbled upon it while searching for it was amazing.

Paige and I had to grab one more Italian meal before we caught the ferry.

Well, we made it! We took a ferry from Varrena to Mellagio (Across Lake Como) and then drove to the alps. The drive was, well...Italian style! On the highways it really is ok, it is just on the narrow roads in and out of town. In town there are buildings on both sides of the streets, quaint and cobblestone roads, cute anyway until someone is tailgating you, or two cars are going past each other and a bicyclist is also trying to get by, all at the very same time! Or a car decides to stop in the middle of the road. Anyway, we finally made it out of the Como region without the help of Delores, our GPS, who just wanted to stay in Lake Como. Can't blame her.

Seemed pretty good until we came to another Lake, I think Lake Maggiano (or something like that). We had lake on one side and a rock wall on the other. I lost my breath a couple times, and Monte almost though we were losing our side mirror, just too narrow!!
But, we made it through! We had a gorgeous drive to the alps. When you think of highway one up north on the edge of the coast and all the twists and turns, right on the edge? Well, think about the same drive but about 10 times higher up, again, can almost take your breath away, not only in beauty, but also in fear! We were so high and just a bitty little guard rail holding us in. Then you see crazy people riding bikes! As we drove we also went through many tunnels under mountains. One was about 20 min drive under the earth! Walk in the park compared to Italy!

Then we arrived, parked our car and set out for the gondola. Not bad, especially after practicing in the Italian Dolomites. It is just gorgeous! We have a nice apartment, back to the comfy down beds with no sheet (my favorite), just a nice clean, crisp, alpine environment. And a special treat...wash cloths! Our first so far this whole trip. We went to one of the two places to eat. That is when we discover a problem....major flies! The waistress said it is unusual, that of course they some because of all the cows, but this year, and especially now, it is really bad. Honestly, we couldn't enjoy our food because there were so many around. Imagine how many are in the kitchen....gross!

I love to eat out and really don't look forward to cooking while on vacation, but I'm thrilled that we have a kitchen were we are staying! So, that is a bummer, but outside it seems fine, and we have killed a few flies in our place, but they are gone now. Another thing I wish is that the cows were down near us more. I guess two days ago the farmers took them high up in the alps to graze, so we don't get to listen to their bells chime the way we did when we were here before. I love the cow bells. We do have goats though, and we love to hear them ring. We also bought milk, cheese, sausages, bread and butter, all fresh! But no eggs to be had in this village, I guess a fox ate the chickens just in the last day or two! Great fresh food. We already broke into it even though our dinner was done.

Looking forward,to hiking tomorrow!

It is 11:29 pm and Monte and Paige are fast at sleep...I may break into that farm fresh food! Shhh!
