Today we took a gondola from Gimmelwald (at about 4500 feet) up to Murrren, which is about about 5000 feet, then the funicular up to Allmendhubel which is about 5700 feet. From there we hiked to Schiltalp which is 6400 feet. Then we hiked down. The whole trail took us about 5 hours with lots of resting and picture taking.
We also stopped at a cheese factory at the height of our elevation and heard they had good milkshakes. So, we gave them a try. Well....not exactly the same as in the states, more like chocolate milk. But it was ok, and only $16.50!
The views were absolutely amazing! There are no words to describe it, and no pictures that can show it. It is what I had always hoped to see and missed it on our last trip since we couldn't hike much. The weather was perfect, maybe 70-75 degrees, and clouds would come and go. We walked seeing huge mountain peaks covered in snow, with wildflowers growing everywhere, huge waterfalls dropping thousands of feet. Amazing! And Paige doing her very best even though she had pain in her knee. She was quite a trooper. Monte and I were tired, so we know it was even harder for her.
We hiked back down to Murren, had dinner of some kind of potato cheese, veal, thing, with maybe a hundred fewer flies, and only paid about $90.00! We probably only had to shew about 10 away. We went to the store for coffee, eggs, and tea and decided to buy Swiss fondue, pre-packaged. We knew we wanted to eat a Swiss fondue, that's what you do while in Switzerland, we just couldn't stomach the idea if having a fly get in...too disgusting to imagine! So, we will have our own dinner at home, with no flies. I do admit, I'm really getting tired of melted cheese and potatoes!
I think Paige and I long for the food in Italy, but like everything else here. We even got to hike with all the cows while they we "in the alp" for the summer.
Can you tell I like cows?
It is nice to have the quiet of our own apartment, but really do enjoy the experience of B&B's too. And, this is a very tiny village (100 people) so it isn't loud, its just that we are not sharing a house with other people and that is a nice change.
It has been a great time so far. We hope to hike some more tomorrow as long as Paige is able. By the time we were walking our last small stretch home, it began to cloud and sprinkle. People say the weather had not been good for several days before, so we were very blessed to have had it so magnificent. Maybe we'll be lucky again!
I think part of the problem of getting decent pictures is that the sun is too bright and you just can't get the whole mountain or range of mountains in the lens.
Getting tired of melted cheese, but not the beer!
