But first we had to return our French car in France then go to Germany for our next car. We decide it would be easiest to drive to Germany, get the car and have me (Susan) drive it while Monte drove the French car, and both of us driving to return the French car in Strasbourg, France. I made Paige come with me since I didn't have a GPS and it was going to be follow the leader. OK, so I got to drive in Germany and France with a stick shift (which I haven't driven in years) in a new kind of car- push button start etc., with no GPS, in two foreign non-English speaking counties! Woo Hoo!
We got the rental car in Germany...check
We drove back into France ....check
We drove around and around....We finally found the rental agency, not easy since it won't come up on GPS, and Monte drove into an underground garage to return the car...check
I was going to find parking and meet him...YEAH, RIGHT! You have to imagine we are in a big city at the train station: people, bikes, cars everywhere! I thought I was doing ok until I realized I didn't know any of the driving signs. Monte has always driven so I never paid any attention. I didn't know if a street was "One Way" or "Do Not Enter" or anything! Plus, we had to keep track of where Monte was because we had to meet up with him again and he had no idea where we were, plus everything is in French! OMG! It was CRAZY! Paige's job was to watch for red lights and speed limits, and people. She was wishing she had stayed with Monte because it was quite a ride! But we did find a parking garage, and find our way back to Monte. The parking space was so small that there was no way to get Paige's wheelchair out ( this car is too small to have it in the trunk) so I was going to back out a few feet to get it out...but I couldn't get the car in reverse! So...off we went walking. And we did find him!
We spent about 1 1/2 hours in Stasbourg wondering in Pettit France. It was pretty with its waterways and old buildings. We didn't have as much time as we expected because the whole car return took longer than we thought, plus we are getting into Germany earlier to see the game.
Awe....the autobahn! Some people are going about 100 miles an hour and are about 15 feet behind the person in front of them. Monte says he has to be on his "A " game!
We arrived at our friend Karsten's work where they have a sports bar with a big screen, food, and drink. We had a great time partying with Germans and watching them play against France in the World Cup. I didn't get pictures, because I didn't want to be a pest with my flash. It was great fun, and nice to see our friends Kerstin and Karsten. And...Germany won!
